Ruby Warrington | Author | Creator of the “Sober Curious” Movement

Ruby Warrington is the author of Sober Curious, the book that helped give language to one of the fastest-growing cultural shifts around alcohol.

For decades, public conversations about drinking tended to fall into two categories: people who drank normally and people who were labeled alcoholics. But Ruby noticed a growing number of people who didn’t quite fit into either group — people who weren’t experiencing full-blown addiction but were beginning to question the role alcohol played in their lives.

She called this space “sober curious.”

Rather than asking people to adopt a permanent identity or label, the sober curious approach invites people to simply start asking questions: Why do I drink? How does alcohol actually affect my life? And what might change if I drank less — or stopped altogether?

Ruby began exploring these ideas while working as a journalist and editor covering wellness, culture, and spirituality. As she spoke openly about her own decision to stop drinking, she discovered that thousands of people were quietly wrestling with the same questions.

Her 2018 book Sober Curious helped bring those conversations into the mainstream, offering a framework for people who feel caught in the “gray area” between socially accepted drinking and traditional definitions of alcoholism.

The concept quickly resonated around the world. What began as a personal exploration evolved into a broader cultural movement as more people began reevaluating alcohol’s place in their lives without necessarily identifying as being “in recovery.”

Through her writing, speaking, and community-building work, Ruby has helped reshape the way people talk about alcohol — moving the conversation away from stigma and toward curiosity, self-awareness, and choice.

In Please Drink Responsibly, Ruby helps explain why so many people are beginning to question drinking culture and how the sober curious movement is creating space for new conversations about alcohol.
