Thomas F. Babor, PhD, MPH

Professor of Public Health | Alcohol Policy Researcher

Dr. Thomas F. Babor is one of the world’s leading researchers on alcohol policy and public health. He is a Professor of Public Health at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and has spent decades studying how alcohol affects individuals, communities, and global health systems.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Babor has published hundreds of scientific papers examining alcohol use, addiction, treatment, and the social consequences of drinking. His work has helped shape international understanding of alcohol-related harm and the policies that can reduce it.

He is perhaps best known as a lead author of Alcohol: No Ordinary Commodity, a landmark research project conducted with the World Health Organization that evaluated the effectiveness of alcohol control policies around the world. The study demonstrated that many widely promoted industry solutions — such as “drink responsibly” messaging — have little measurable impact on reducing alcohol harm, while policies like pricing, taxation, and restrictions on availability are far more effective.

Dr. Babor has also contributed to the development of screening tools used by healthcare providers worldwide to identify risky drinking behavior and intervene earlier.

In addition to his academic research, he has served as an advisor to international health organizations and governments working to reduce alcohol-related harm through evidence-based policy.

In Please Drink Responsibly, Dr. Babor provides a scientific and policy perspective on alcohol’s impact on public health, helping explain how alcohol-related harm is shaped not just by individual behavior, but by industry practices, cultural norms, and government policy.
